Saber Interactive Independent in $247M Deal From Embracer
In a significant shift for the gaming industry, Saber Interactive has become independent from Embracer Group, following a $247 million deal. The sale was to Beacon Interactive, a new company formed by Matthew Karch, a co-founder of Saber. This move marks a major change for Saber Interactive, which joined Embracer Group in 2020 for $525 million.
Beacon Interactive, under this new arrangement, will take over not just Saber Interactive’s global studios but also their ongoing projects. These include games from 3D Realms, Slipgate Ironworks, Mad Head Games, New World Interactive, Nimble Giant, Fractured Byte, DIGIC, and Sandbox Strategies, amounting to 38 video games currently in development.

Embracer Group, on the other hand, will retain several studios previously associated with Saber Interactive. These include 34BigThings, 4A Games, Aspyr, Beamdog, Demiurge Studios, Shiver, Snapshot Games, Tripwire Interactive, Tuxedo Labs, and Zen Studios. Two of these, 4A Games and Zen Studios, might still join Saber Interactive, although the Metro IP will remain with Embracer’s subsidiary, PLAION.
Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer Group, stated that this sale benefits both parties. It allows Embracer to exit all operations in Russia and maintain key companies, valuable IPs, and future publishing rights while improving the company’s liquidity. This sale is part of Embracer’s recent restructuring process, hinting at further potential sales and shifts within the industry.

Matthew Karch emphasized that separation was the right move for both Embracer and the core of Saber, allowing both companies to better grow their businesses. Karch will remain a shareholder of Embracer and continue collaborating with Wingefors’ group on future projects.
