PlayStation 2 Sold 160 Million Units, says Jim Ryan
Jim Ryan, the outgoing president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has shared impressive sales figures for the PlayStation 2. In a recent podcast interview, he revealed that the console has sold 160 million units worldwide.
This update marks the first time in over a decade that sales figures for the PS2 have been released. Back in March 2012, Sony announced that the PlayStation 2 had sold 155 million units, making it the best-selling console of all time.

Even though production of the PlayStation 2 ceased in early 2013, remaining stock continued to sell well, especially in emerging markets like Brazil. Ryan also discussed the PlayStation 5’s success, stating that it is on track to become their most successful console based on various factors. He highlighted that the PS5, driven by PlayStation Studios, offers some of the best games and experiences ever seen on a console.

As of December 31, 2023, Sony reported selling 54.7 million PS5 units globally. Despite setting records for revenue, the company has adjusted its sales expectations for 2024. Ryan announced his retirement last September, stepping down on January 1, 2024, after nearly three decades with Sony. He reflected on his career, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work on products that have impacted millions of lives worldwide. Ryan remains optimistic about Sony’s future, even as he looks forward to a new chapter.
