Bethesda’s E3 2017 Press Conference: ‘The Evil Within 2,’ ‘Wolfenstein 2,’ and much more
Despite having a rather transparent human element and a quirky theme, Bethesda’s E3 2017 press conference closed out Sunday night with a bang. Along with a slew of new content for their already released titles, the studio also announced two new games coming out in late 2017. Read on below for some highlights from the show, as well as reveal trailers for Bethesda’s biggest announcements.
Bethesda takes on VR
In a move that seemed rather predictable, Bethesda announced that along with Fallout 4 VR, their highly acclaimed title Doom would receive the virtual reality treatment. Titled Doom VFR, the gameplay reveal showcased the seamless movement and shooting mechanics being incorporated into the VR experience. While both games are slated for a 2017 release, there’s no definitive date as of yet.
Skyrim across the board
Bethesda’s most popular Elder Scrolls game to date got some love throughout the conference, as it was announced that the studio’s recently-released card game, Elder Scrolls Legends, will receive Skyrim-themed DLC in the near future. Furthermore, Skyrim for Nintendo Switch was showcased with both amiibo and Joy-Con controller support. This represents the first time that Skyrim can be played with motion controls. A release date still hasn’t been confirmed for the Switch port (sometime Holiday 2017), while the Legends DLC will come out on June 29th.
Dishonored DLC and Quake World Championship
Closing out the middle section of the conference was a trailer for Dishonored 2‘s first DLC, as well as another look at Quake Champions. The additional content looks to focus on a new character, a female assassin named Bobby, and her mission to assassinate the series’ most mysterious character, the Outsider. While the Quake gameplay didn’t showcase anything we hadn’t seen (besides a new playable character in the form of B.J. Blazkowicz), it did come with the reveal of the Quake World Championship, which will take place on August 26th.
The Evil Within is back….
Closing out the conference were two big reveals, one of which was The Evil Within 2. Officer Sebastian Castellanos is back and going more insane than ever, as the trailer showcases the character’s descent into madness. Sebastian appears to be searching for his daughter while combating supernatural monstrosities and dealing with the betrayal of an old friend. With stunning graphics, a slew of new enemies and settings, and an intriguing plot, this was by far the standout moment of the show for me. What’s more, it will be coming out this year – The Evil Within 2 is set to release on October 13th.
….and so is Wolfenstein
The second new title Bethesda has been working on is in fact the leaked Wolfenstein 2, subtitled The New Colossus. Some notable highlights from the lengthy gameplay trailer include a Nazi-controlled United States, B.J.’s triumphant return to the land of the living, a resistance group made up of minority groups, several new weapons, an exosuit, a mountable German mechanized wardog, and an October 27th release date. In short, this next installment in Bethesda’s new Wolfenstein series looks to outdo it predecessor in every way, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.
While this year’s Bethesda press conference lacked the general enthusiasm and liveliness of year’s past, it did offer up several exciting announcements and gameplay reveals. For more coverage on everything E3 2017, keep it here at Goomba Stomp.
