AMD Teases AI Scaling Tech for Enhanced Gaming in New Devices
AMD is gearing up for a “gigantic year” with its focus on AI-powered graphic scaling technology. This innovation is aimed at enhancing gaming devices, stirring excitement among fans about its potential application in graphics cards and possibly the PS5 Pro.
For years, AMD has been developing the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) system, although it has lagged behind competitors like DLSS, introduced two years earlier, and Intel’s Xe Super Sampling (XeSS). These rival solutions largely rely on “artificial intelligence,” a term currently used for machine learning algorithms. AMD is not far behind, as it prepares a new solution in this field.
Mark Papermaster, AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, mentioned in the No Priors podcast, “2024 is a huge year for us as we have spent many years developing our hardware and software capabilities in artificial intelligence.” He highlighted AMD’s significant strides in implementing AI across its product range, including cloud services, PCs, embedded systems, and gaming devices. “We are enabling our gaming devices to scale using AI, making 2024 a truly massive year for development,” Papermaster assured.

A key question remains regarding what Papermaster means by “gaming devices.” It’s safe to assume various graphics cards are involved, but AMD also supplies chips for PlayStation consoles. The enhancement in PS5 Pro’s capabilities could potentially stem from new scaling options rather than just more powerful components.
