NXpress Nintendo Podcast #171: ‘Bloodstained’ and ‘Cadence of Hyrule’

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Podcast Review

While it may feel like late June was the calm before the Nintendo Switch’s storm, there were actually some decent rumblings that rolled through the eShop; this week Rick and Patrick sit down with Goomba Stomp editors Mike Worby and James Baker to find out how two of the more notable ones fared. First on the gothic chopping block is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the much-anticipated throwback to classic Castlevania from series producer Koji Igarashi. While Rick and Mike traitorously played the PS4 version and loved every second of exploring the atmospheric, labyrinthine castle, Patrick took a musket ball for the team and brings impressions of the beleaguered Switch version. While there has been plenty of discussion about that port’s noticeable downgrade (and with good reason), is there enough good game below the slightly blurry surface for Switch owners to consider a purchase? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Next, Patrick and James sing the praises of Cadence of Hyrule — but perhaps for different reasons? While James was able to find his rhythm on the way to victory, Patrick shamefully turned on Fixed Beat mode — and loved every second of it. Regardless of how you play, the fun had from this Zelda spinoff is tough to beat. If you haven’t picked it up yet, maybe we can convince you.

Before all that, however, all four make some way-too-early requests for some things we’d like to see in the just-announced sequel to Breath of the Wild. Hmm…let’s see. Dungeons, dungeons, and dungeons? Sure, let’s go with that. For all this and more on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, tune in!

Most Anticipated Nintendo Switch Games of 2020

Happy new year! With a pretty great 12 months for Nintendo behind us, it’s time to take a look at what’s on the horizon for the Switch in 2020. Patrick and Tim hold down the fort this week, and while the upcoming release schedule is still pretty vague at this early stage, they still find more than a few titles to get excited about. From the latest Animal Crossing and ports like Xenoblade Chronicles to some intriguing indies, there’s plenty to cover on the confirmed front. But of course, there always a bit of reckless speculation to have fun with as well! Will 2020 finally be the year we see Bayonetta 3? What other surprises might Nintendo have in store for fans?

Tim and Patrick go through their personal lists, but also take time to give a little love to those other games that Switch owners might be eagerly awaiting. Before all that, however, Patrick also gives his amateur take on Pokemon Sword and Shield. For all this and more, have a listen!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #188: The Game Awards and the Best Games of 2019

Nintendo Podcast Best Nintendo Games 2019

It’s that time of the year when everyone looks back at all of the great games released over the last 365 days, and the NXpress Podcast is no exception. This week finds Rick, Tim, and Patrick mulling over Goomba Stomp’s list of our Best Games of 2019, debating the merits and placing of some of the choices while generally agreeing that there was a lot to like for Switch owners this year. Along the way we suggest a few substitutions, reflect on the greatness of the Switch games that cracked the list (especially that #1), and look forward to what 2020 might bring.

Of course, before all the positivity and praise, we have a few things to say about the latest iteration of the Game Awards. While Rick enjoyed the brisk pacing, there’s a feeling that the actual awards in this ‘awards show’ might be getting a wee bit short-shrifted. Perhaps a celebration about the past year shouldn’t focus so much on teasers for the coming year? Feel free to give us your opinion on whether The Game Awards succeeds as a tribute to the industry, or seems to be tending toward being just another promotional event. For all this and more, have a listen!
