Helldivers 2 Surpasses 750k Concurrent Players Across PS5 and PC
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, has become a significant hit this year. The game has surpassed expectations, reaching over 750k concurrent players across both PS5 and PC platforms.
Initially, the studio anticipated a peak of around 150k players. However, the actual numbers far exceeded this, with Steam alone contributing approximately 450k concurrent players. This success created challenges for Arrowhead, as they were not fully prepared for such a large influx of players.
During the Nordic Game conference, Arrowhead Game Studios’ founder and Helldivers 2 director, Johan Pilestedt, discussed the game’s development and unexpected success. He explained that the studio had to quickly adapt, establishing a dedicated problem-solving team known as “The War Room” to handle the surge of players. The backend team played a crucial role in managing this situation under significant pressure.

Helldivers 2’s development took nearly eight years, far longer than initially planned. Originally expected to take three years, the extended timeline required a larger budget, which Sony supported.
Despite a few bumps along the way, including new PlayStation requirements that affected player counts, Helldivers 2 remains a triumph for Arrowhead Game Studios. The game has sold over 12 million units, marking a new era of success for both the developer and Sony.
