Avowed Moved to Unreal Engine 5.3, Says Insider
Obsidian Entertainment’s highly anticipated RPG, Avowed, has transitioned to Unreal Engine 5.3, as confirmed by Jez Corden. This shift positions Avowed among the first projects to utilize the latest version of Epic Games’ advanced game development engine.
The transition aims to address past criticisms regarding the game’s graphics. Fans were disappointed with the visuals in the previous trailer, prompting Obsidian to enhance the game’s graphical fidelity and overall performance using Unreal Engine 5.3. This upgrade is expected to improve lighting, textures, and environmental details significantly.
Assistance from Xbox’s internal tech department and The Coalition has been crucial in this transition. The Coalition, known for its expertise with Unreal Engine, is also working on Gears 6 while supporting other studios like Obsidian.

Avowed is set in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series and offers a first-person RPG experience. The game will feature a mix of bright, colorful magic and traditional combat elements, aiming to deliver an engaging and visually stunning adventure.
The game is scheduled for release in the fall of 2024 as an Xbox exclusive. The move to Unreal Engine 5.3 is expected to elevate the game’s visual standards, aligning it with other visually impressive titles like Hellblade II.
