Akane-banashi Anime Confirmed: Shonen Jump’s Breakout Female Protagonist Gets TV Adaptation
Recently, a major leak from Shonen Jump revealed exciting news about one of the publisher’s most beloved recent series.
The source of the leak was Shueisha’s own Zebrack app, and naturally, the news spread like wildfire across the community.
Suspicions began when fans briefly spotted a post on X (formerly Twitter) confirming the release of the Akane-banashi TV anime.
The confirmation gained traction as numerous Japanese readers acknowledged the anime announcement before the banner was taken down.
Akane-banashi began serialization in 2022 and quickly rose to international popularity, ranking as one of the top Shonen series of the 2020s.

Despite strong competition from titles like RuriDragon, Undead Unluck, Sakamoto Days, and The Elusive Samurai, it secured its place among the top.
The leak was later confirmed by an official press release, accompanied by the series’ first promotional image and teaser trailer.
Shueisha Reportedly Confirms Akane-banashi Anime in Surprise Leak:

The anime will air in Japan on the TV Asahi Network’s “IMAnimation” programming block. Additional updates will be shared during the Akane-banashi panel at Anime NYC 2025.
It will also feature appearances by Shueisha editor Seisuke Araki and TV Asahi producer Kazuki Endo.
Fans attending in person can also enjoy exclusive freebies and raffles in addition to behind-the-scenes content.

The Akane-banashi manga is written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, telling the story of a teenage girl named Akane Osaki.
The story follows a girl determined to reach the highest rank in rakugo. It’s a form of Japanese verbal storytelling and comedy, through which she also hopes to avenge her father. He was unfairly expelled from the art under bitter circumstances.
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese art form where a single performer tells long stories featuring multiple characters, voicing them all solo.
The performer changes their voice and uses hand gestures to portray multiple characters during the performance.
As a curious and talented daughter, Akane has studied his father performing the art with his former master.
Now, she’s determined to seek justice for her father’s downfall, while aiming to legitimize rakugo in the modern era.
Akane-banashi Recognized by Shonen Jump as a Top New Gen Series:

Akane-banashi was selected by Shonen Jump as part of its “New Power Generation” campaigns that were held to showcase the strength of a variety of shows, such as Kagurabachi, Witch Watch and Sakamoto Days along with Akane-banashi.
It ranked #10 in a popularity poll conducted among Japanese readers, cementing its reputation as one of Jump’s most treasured new-era series.
If you’re an avid reader, you can catch up with the manga. New chapters of Akane-banashi are released weekly on platforms like VIZ and Shonen Jump.
Currently, 12 print volumes of the series are available in English through Viz, with Volumes 13 and 14 set to release later this year.
Unfortunately, there’s still no official release date for the Akane-banashi anime. So, fans will have to wait a little longer for the show to premiere.
Nevertheless, we’ll update you as soon as an official release date is announced. Stay tuned for the latest updates on your favorite anime. Happy watching! 🥳
