The Fine Balance Between Skill and Luck in Multiplayer Games

Skill and luck frequently impact gaming outcomes. This is true in single-player games and multiplayer games. Even in the most sophisticated skill-based games, a little luck goes a long way. Before we pry open this fascinating topic, it’s a good idea to define skill and luck, respectively. According to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, skill is defined as follows: The ability to do something well; expertise or dexterity. 

There is a clear inference to natural or acquired ability with skill-based elements. Luck is defined as follows: Success or failure, apparently brought by chance. Clearly, luck is out of our hands as players – it happens randomly, unexpectedly, or however the universe desires. Marrying these two concepts in multiplayer games becomes a fascinating field of discovery.

Players routinely dabble in multiplayer games to achieve strategic objectives. MPGs can be likened to team games, or sports where each person has a part to play in achieving the broader goals. Any team sport like volleyball, cricket, soccer, polo, or rugby clearly demonstrates the impact of individual players on team performance. These multiplayer games rely on a combination of skill and good fortune for overall player success. 

Often, highly skilled players fail to achieve their desired objectives because luck simply wasn’t on their side. There are many such examples of this, including MMO games like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty, where players work together to overcome overwhelming odds. Sometimes, the proverbial roll of the dice goes the other way, and players lose. However, practice, precision, and the pursuit of perfection routinely improve a player’s winning chances. The Spectrum of Luck versus Skill in Gaming

There is a crossover, perhaps even an inflection point, where skill and luck run in the same direction. Knowledge is power, and an underlying understanding of gaming functionality certainly helps. Games of pure skill include chess. Yet even in chess, there is the possibility that one’s opponent misses an opportunity for a takedown, thereby handing a breather to his or her opponent. This is considered good fortune, perhaps a lack of judgment. But here, luck goes the other way.

However, there are random spawns or critical hits; these impact how well players perform. As we move further down the spectrum, there’s a 50-50 split between skill and luck in games like Hearthstone and Poker. Remember that card dealing is out of a player’s control. What the players can control is the way the cards are played.

Overall, it’s true that luck serves an important architectural purpose. Especially in multiplayer game design. By blending chance with expertise, many games remain unpredictable.
