The Best Video Game Box Art of 2021
The Best Examples of Video Game Box Art in 2021
Video game box art can go a long way in convincing people to purchase a game. Not everyone surfs the net and reads blogs looking for feedback on whether a game is any good. And back in the day— before we had the internet— video game box art was sometimes all we had to gauge whether a game was something should invest in. It’s how I took a chance on games like Super Metroid and Earthbound, putting down my hard-earned money on two games based on how they were packaged and sold. And it just so happens that those two games wound up being two of my favourite games of all time.
Designers and artists face the challenge of balancing a game’s content with a slick design that will draw the eye of a consumer who will pass over hundreds of games when walking into a GameStop. Publishers are hoping their art will convince the customer to stop and take notice— and some box arts will shy customers away from a great game, while others will persuade unknowing shoppers into buying the product.
Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m superficial, but the way I look at it, if a developer really cares about their product, they’ll want the design to stand out, and be proud of how their product looks on store shelves. Unfortunately, sometimes box art can be a blatant misrepresentation of the game itself, so at the end of the day, you should never judge a game by its cover, but it’s perfectly fine to judge the cover itself. That said; they say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that’s true, then forgive me for not dropping any explanations or additional nuggets about each entry. I will instead just let these posters speak for themselves! Here are the best examples of box art for games released in 2021.
Special Mention: The Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection artwork seen above is incredible. Unfortunately, there are no plans for a physical release but wouldn’t it be nice if they did release it with that image on the box art!
