Xbox Series X|S May Emulate PS3 Games Before PS5

The Xbox Series X and Series S could soon support PS3 emulation, possibly outpacing the PS5 in backward compatibility. A recent update to the developer mode of the Xbox Series S includes OpenGL and Vulkan support, paving the way for this exciting development.

Modern Vintage Gamer, a YouTuber known for analyzing emulation capabilities, reported on the potential for PS3 emulation on these consoles. This update is significant because PS3 emulation is notoriously difficult, even on powerful PCs. Currently, PlayStation only offers streaming for its PS3 library, so native emulation on Xbox hardware is a significant step forward.

The update not only hints at PS3 game support but also suggests that Nintendo Switch games might soon be playable on Xbox Series X and Series S. The successful running of the Nintendo 3DS emulator, Citra, on these consoles further supports this possibility.

Xbox Series X and Series S already excel in backward compatibility. Adding PS3 support would greatly enhance their appeal, especially for fans of the PS3 library.

While nothing is confirmed yet, the Xbox Series S remains an excellent emulation machine at just $300. This update could give Xbox a significant edge over PlayStation, offering gamers even more reasons to choose Xbox for their retro gaming needs.
