This week, we continue our Super Mario marathon and finally get around to discussing the third 3D original platformer in the series after Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The iconic mascot’s long resume features some of the greatest platformers to ever grace any home console and on this episode we are reviewing Super Mario Galaxy, created by Nintendo’s EAD Tokyo studio, whose first project was DK Jungle Beat, a disappointing flop for Nintendo. We also take some time to discuss the Mega Man movie as well as Runbow, the debut title from Toronto-based developer 13AM Games. And be sure to like our new Facebook page!

The NXpress is a weekly podcast hosted at NXpresspodcast.com in which we discuss all things Nintendo. We stay clear from in-depth game strategies and keep things light. There’s plenty of nostalgia and feedback that will resonate with vintage game collectors; meanwhile modern games are sprinkled in and each week our show revolves around a central theme.

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #189: Most Anticipated Nintendo Switch Games of 2020

Most Anticipated Nintendo Switch Games of 2020

Happy new year! With a pretty great 12 months for Nintendo behind us, it’s time to take a look at what’s on the horizon for the Switch in 2020. Patrick and Tim hold down the fort this week, and while the upcoming release schedule is still pretty vague at this early stage, they still find more than a few titles to get excited about. From the latest Animal Crossing and ports like Xenoblade Chronicles to some intriguing indies, there’s plenty to cover on the confirmed front. But of course, there always a bit of reckless speculation to have fun with as well! Will 2020 finally be the year we see Bayonetta 3? What other surprises might Nintendo have in store for fans?

Tim and Patrick go through their personal lists, but also take time to give a little love to those other games that Switch owners might be eagerly awaiting. Before all that, however, Patrick also gives his amateur take on Pokemon Sword and Shield. For all this and more, have a listen!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #188: The Game Awards and the Best Games of 2019

Nintendo Podcast Best Nintendo Games 2019

It’s that time of the year when everyone looks back at all of the great games released over the last 365 days, and the NXpress Podcast is no exception. This week finds Rick, Tim, and Patrick mulling over Goomba Stomp’s list of our Best Games of 2019, debating the merits and placing of some of the choices while generally agreeing that there was a lot to like for Switch owners this year. Along the way we suggest a few substitutions, reflect on the greatness of the Switch games that cracked the list (especially that #1), and look forward to what 2020 might bring.

Of course, before all the positivity and praise, we have a few things to say about the latest iteration of the Game Awards. While Rick enjoyed the brisk pacing, there’s a feeling that the actual awards in this ‘awards show’ might be getting a wee bit short-shrifted. Perhaps a celebration about the past year shouldn’t focus so much on teasers for the coming year? Feel free to give us your opinion on whether The Game Awards succeeds as a tribute to the industry, or seems to be tending toward being just another promotional event. For all this and more, have a listen!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #187: Five Year Amiibo Anniversary, Indie World and ‘The Touryst’

Published

on

amiibo anniversary

This week is a great one, as Ricky D returns to the podcast to help Tim and Patrick sort through Nintendo’s latest Indie World presentation. Was there anything that caught our eye beyond Sports Story, the sequel to a game we loved (if you don’t count the one of us who didn’t play it…), or are the multitude of indie games starting to blend in a bit with each other? To this point, Patrick reviews a voxel hack’n’slasher called Riverbond that is certainly pleasant enough, but may have a hard time standing out in a crowded eShop.

After the indie talk, the guys take a look back on five years of amiibo, and just where Nintendo might go with these collectible figures. Though functionality within games seems to be getting mostly fazed out, that hasn’t stopped collectors from wanting every single one; just ask Rick! For this segment, the guys look at how they collect, why they collect, and whether they still will collect, all while enjoying having a reason to talk about amiibo again.

Lastly, Patrick gives his first impressions of The Touryst, a laid-back, exploration-based puzzler that has a little bit of everything (platforming, mini-games, scuba diving, etc.) for those looking to try something relaxing. Though he’s not very far into it, this island-hopping adventure might well end up being one of his favorite games of the year. For all this and more, have a listen!
