Life is Strange Studio Hit with Claims of Toxic Work Culture
Deck Nine, the studio behind Life is Strange: True Colors, and Square Enix are in hot water over claims of workplace toxicity and the publisher’s approach to creative choices in the game’s narrative. An investigation by IGN revealed that both current and former employees of Deck Nine accused the company of not adhering to the inclusivity values that Life is Strange is known for. Moreover, Square Enix has faced harsh criticism.
Sources claimed that contacts at Square Enix London acted as bullies, putting immense pressure on Deck Nine’s staff, leading to a toxic work environment. A major issue was Square Enix London’s reluctance to reveal that the game’s protagonist, Alex, is bisexual before its release. They only shifted their stance when feedback turned favorable, cautioning Deck Nine against making Life is Strange seem like “a gay game.”

Additionally, Deck Nine has been criticized for issues of toxicity, sexual harassment, transphobia, and management’s aggression towards female employees. Zak Garris, former creative director at Deck Nine, was accused by multiple sources of opposing diversity, pushing for the removal of a transgender character from True Colors. Garris defended himself, criticizing the narrative team’s work and blaming them for part of the toxicity reported.
