Pokémon Announces New Movie With a New Hero and Mimikyu
Pokémon is finally back with a brand new movie on a big screen, but the catch is this time, the franchise is taking a very different approach.
The upcoming movie Titled Pokémon: Wild Card, which will be a full-length animated movie will not feature the adventures of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu as we know.
Instead, the story will revolve around a mysterious Pokémon Trading Card Game player and his unusual partner, Mimikyu.
Well it might sound shocking but it’s true! The movie is planned to be released at the beginning of the year 2027.
A New Kind of Pokémon Adventure:
For decades, Ash and Pikachu were the faces of Pokémon’s Journey. But as we know from the Pokemon series Ash’s journey was being concluded with a worthy farewell and now the series goes with new heroes.
Despite the end of Ash and Pikachu’s journey over television they were still the face of their animated movies. But it seems new heroes are coming in Pokemon franchise movies as well, which seems to be an interesting change of event for Pokemon fans.
But point to be noted that, it won’t be usual Pokemon movies. Rather than introducing another traditional Pokémon Trainer journey, the movie will entirely focus on the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG).
So, the journey will start with a new protagonist who is a card-game player pursuing his ambitions alongside Mimikyu. And that’s all we know yet because official details about the story are untold.
The concept also makes Wild Cards noticeably different from the current Pokémon Horizons era. Instead of simply bringing characters such as Liko and Roy to theaters, Pokémon is introducing another protagonist specifically for this movie.
Pokémon Trading Cards Take Center Stage In The Film:
The decision to make a feature film around the Pokémon TCG is another significant move by the franchise.
Pokémon has come up with this idea in animation before. The short series titled, Pokémon: Path to the Peak, has also followed the path of a young player named Ava as she became involved with competitive Pokémon TCG play and worked toward the Pokémon World Championships. Wild Card, however, brings the card-game concept to a much larger feature-film format this time.
The announcement itself was made during the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, an event that brings together competitors from Pokémon’s various games, including the Trading Card Game world wide.
A Fresh Era for Pokémon Movies?
Well, there are still plenty of unanswered questions coming from fans, like how exactly will Pokémon battles work within a story focusing solely on the Trading Card Game?
Will the Pokémon exist alongside the human characters, or will much of the action take place through the cards (like in Yu Gi Oh or Vanguard)? And what exactly connects the mysterious protagonist to Mimikyu?
Those details haven’t been fully revealed yet. Which might be answered in future announcements.
But one thing is clear is that Pokémon: Wild Card represents an unusually bold change for the animated movie franchise. Instead of depending on Ash and Pikachu’s journey, Pokémon is featuring a new brand new duo while giving its enormously popular card game a starring role in the film.
Whether the new hero and Mimikyu can create the same kind of emotional connection audiences once had with Ash and Pikachu remains to be seen.
But after years without a new animated feature, Pokémon: Wild Card is giving fans something genuinely different to look forward to when it arrives in 2027.
