Published

on

Hello, everyone! If you click by reading the title, I’d like to keep the introduction as easy as possible. If you have just watched every Ghibli movie in the world and are wondering if there is any film out there that can please your timid heart in the same way that Ghibli movies do?

Then you’re at the correct place, my friend. We’ve compiled some of the most lovely and excellent watch lists for you, designed to make your heart skip a beat.

And, sure, you should read it all the way through because there is a bonus or surprise gift for you at the conclusion.

10. Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms:

Maquia is something that closely resembles the work of Studio Ghibli because of its peaceful and aesthetic scenery. Its art style is the way of putting a beautiful story of a mother and son and combining it with exquisite narrative. Makes it a proper, wholesome watch.

Even though it will bring you tears, it’s one of those tough movies that are worth every suffering. The story starts with Morph, who is a legendary being, living a peaceful life by weaving clothes called Hibiol that are precious and magical. They are to stay hidden from human society as they’re treated as outcasts for being different and living an eternal life by not being old.

Maquia, an orphan who lives quite a lonely life, was upset about not having any loved ones in her life. But her life suddenly takes a huge turn when her companion gets attacked by the Mezarte kingdom.

They desired to get their hands on blood or to attempt to get longer lifespans, and hence they started killing and capturing everyone who tended to disobey.

During the war, Maquia got rid of the chaos, but when she looked back, everything was stolen from her. She was left with nothing. Sad and alone, she started wandering in the forest and was close to ending her life. But a cry of a baby from the tent stopped her from taking the step further.

She went inside the tent and saw a beautiful baby wrapped around the arms of her mother, who was killed in the battle. Without hesitation, Maquia decided to adopt the baby as she stepped into the new world. Now, she has someone she can cherish and protect for her life.

I know it was a long description, but don’t worry, it’s just an introduction to the story. There are a lot more details to the story, and you will love it once you start delving into this fantasy and ravishing of Maquia.

9. Wolf children:

One of the most popular movies that is not a creation of Studio Ghibli is Wolf Children. Even if I have to put in a word, there will be something missing, and that is real emotions that you can get only by experiencing the movie.

The story truly depicts the hardship of motherhood, and if you are sensitive (like me), please keep tissues beside you because you will be sobbing throughout the scenes.

Other than that, the animation presented in the movie and the music are peaceful and calming, and the plot doesn’t feel rushed at all. If you want to binge-watch a movie in your free time. This will be a perfect watch for you to relax and catch your breath after a long day.

The story begins with Hana, a girl, who falls in love with a werewolf unknowingly. Soon, they started living together, and there came cute babies, wolf children, Ame and Yuki. Hana is happy to have such a lovely life and family, but her life takes a turn when her husband dies in an accident.

She soon decided to live the city life and move to the countryside with her kids. But living alone in a place where no one is around to help is tough, and not to mention she has two small kids to look after.

The story unfolds delightfully, and if you are new to this slice-of-life genre, then this one will make you fall in love with the premise.

8. A letter to Momo:

Some say this is a lesser-known version of Spirited Away, but I strongly deny that fact. Just because animation and character design resemble each other in the slightest way possible doesn’t portray it’s the same.

I strongly oppose this approach because I know how beautifully the story is narrated to us. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy watching Spirited Away, but not as much as I did A Letter to Momo.

I cried for a minute trying not to be depressed by letting inside my emotions by watching it, and I would suggest you as well to tell out all your grief and emotions because holding your true feelings makes it worse. Now the story revolves around a girl named Momo Miyaura.

She is just 11 and moves with her mother to the small island because his father is dead. But the real plot begins when she starts to notice something unnatural living around her. Yes, these supernatural beings are goblins that are invisible to everyone, but unfortunately, Momo can see them moving all around her house stealing food.

Initially, she gets scared (like a normal person), but later on, it turns out that these weird-looking goblins are harmless. They soon become friends (not friendly ones).

The story gets a lot deeper in the second half of the movie as it portrays the sadness and loneliness behind the people who lost their loved ones. So, don’t sleep on this one and enjoy every moment of the show.

7. I want to eat your pancreas:

This is the only recommendation on our list that is so popular that I wonder if there’s someone who has never heard of it. Until you are living under rocks or new to the anime world. Still, I can’t imagine my list of anime movies without mentioning this absolute masterpiece.

The story is about a cheerful and full-of-life girl, Sakura Yamauchi, who is sadly diagnosed with pancreatic disease, and there is no cure for her. She is soon going to die.

This fact is only known to her parents and one boy, who tends to be his classmate because he secretly or accidentally came across a diary of Sakura. But soon enough, the fact that she is going to die soon goes away as she spends time with the boy hanging around, living her life to the fullest.

This film hits all the right spots of emotions, and if you are someone who tends to not cry even if the world turns upside down, this will force your eyes to break apart to make a way for tears to come out of isolation.

6. Okko’s Inn:

Even though this anime recommendations list is only curated to suggest delightful and underrated gems here, I’d like to mention something that you can enjoy in both forms in episodes as well as in movies.

But for now, I’ll only give you the gist of the movie because I have only watched the movie and not the episodes. But you can go for that as well. Imagine being made a caretaker of an inn owned by your grandmother out of nowhere.

Well, that is the story of our heroine, Okko. It all starts when one day while returning home with her parents, they meet with an accident, and sadly, she survives but her parents can’t. But how is she the only one who was not injured? Well, that’s the mystery for you to watch the film.

The animation, storytelling, and diverse, cute, and wholesome characters make this movie 10/10 to watch. Plus, this movie is family-friendly, as it was adapted from a children’s novel. So, without a thought, you Watch this film with your kids as well.

5. Ride your wave:

One of the most beautifully colored movies I ever watched. It’s deep emotions just make you watch it till you finish it. Even though the movie is a must-watch. I suggest you refrain from watching it during your sad days.

Because even though the first half of the story will bring butterflies to your stomach and make you smile widely, the other half of the show will break you into thousands of pieces. That will never heal. It will burst you in tears and sorrow.

The story revolves around a girl, Hinako Mukaimizu, who is full of life, loves to surf, and plays around the ocean’s waves. She soon meets a guy, Minato Hinageshi, also our hero, who saves him through fire because it turns out that he is a firefighter.

From there, they started to hang out like close friends and eventually began dating. The most delightful moments from the show for real. But after that, something happens that will catch you off guard. So, just go for it without even thinking. You will adore it for sure.

4. You are my Osamu:

These are hidden gems for real. Damn I couldn’t help but gasp. It’s just such a divine movie. The characters, storyline, and animation, every part of this show just makes me rewatch it an immense number of times.

And every time I watch it, it breaks me so brutally, even though it has a surprisingly happy ending. But still, that won’t help you to cry out loud.

The story is set in the dinosaur era, and don’t worry, there’s no single human being in the film like Jurassic Park. It starts with, in the Late Cretaceous Period, a female Maiasaura finds a (random) egg and adopts it as her own.

But Maiasaura are vegetarians, and they consider carnivores as their enemies. And carnivores, on the other hand, see them as their food; it’s pretty obvious.

Maiasaura now has two eggs, one obviously of her own; she names him Light and the other one is Tyrannosaurus; she names him Heart. But this is not the toughest part because, as he grew up, he realized that he was different from his brother and mom.

And that is where the heart’s journey of self-discovery starts. There are other cute and powerful characters in the story, and they enrich the plot in a whole lot better way.

The journey of self-discovery is the toughest route to travel, even for humans. So, if you are someone who loves to watch stories with intense emotions, then this one is just for you.

3. Hotarubi No Mori E:

It’s been a decade since I watched this movie, and no wonder I can still remember that part that gives goosebumps, but in the saddest way possible. It’s so charismatic yet so simple.

A romantic story with two souls of different universes that can never be together or close. I know it sounds disheartening, and it will snap you with a marvelous plot.

The story starts with a small six-year-old girl, Hotaru Takegawa, lost in the woods. She desperately finds the way to his home but can’t find one. Sobbing across the corner of a tree, she finds a mysterious boy, Gin, wearing a mask on his face.

He helps her to find her way, and soon they are out of the forests. But as soon as she turns around and approaches Gin to hug him in thanks, he flinches and moves to the other side.

She soon discovers that he has been cursed, and if any human entity touches him, he will disappear from this world forever.

If you are looking for some beautiful animation and calming animation of Ghibli standard, then this one should be on your must-watch list.

2. Atashinchi Movie:

I don’t know how many of you have watched this show, but if you haven’t had an idea about the anime series, then I’ll recommend you watch its episodic series first, then go for its movie.

Don’t worry, it’s a wonderful family-friendly show, and I bet you will just feel like you are watching your daily life and the moments you spend with your precious mom and family. As said, the show is all about the daily life of Mikan and her wonderfully charming mother.

She has a small brother and, of course, a not-so-expressive father. Just like us. If you are thinking that, why would I watch it? It’s just a normal series with no excitement to it.

Then I’ll highly recommend you give it a shot. Because you never know what will shockingly amaze you.

1.Shin Chan: The Adult Empire Strikes Back:

I don’t think I need to explain why Shichan is awesome. Everyone already knows that, but if you feel like it’s a bit childish to watch Shinchan at your age, then just stop thinking and go for this movie. I mean, there’s an immense number of Shin-chan movies out for you to watch, but trust me, it’s a goat 10/10.

And for a bit of spoilers, you will get to view a side of your favorite childhood character, Shinchan, that you never saw in the episodic series.

Just to give you a gist of the movie, it’s about Shin Chan’s parents going to an amusement park dedicated to their old memories, I mean, filled with stuff from their childhood, like, for example, their favorite bands, goodies, music, and the entire street buildup of old-designed houses. But there’s a twist to it.

This amusement park is built to manipulate adults. Yes, you read that right! And for more details, just go and binge the movie.

Only yesterday: ( Bonus Watch)

Ok, don’t come at me. I know the title says TOP 10 anime movies that are not GHIBLI. I know, only yesterday was a GHIBLI movie, but hear me out. The only reason I’m adding it to my list is because it’s super duper much underrated, like criminally underrated.

I mean, this is the only Ghibli movie that I found; no one is talking about it, no one told me to watch it, and no one said to me how lovely it is. So, I’m here to promote it and get more fans into it.

For the story part, it begins with a 27-year-old woman, Taeko Okajima, often finding herself delving into her work life and regular, boring, and steady life in Tokyo.

During the breaks, as always, she decides to go to the countryside and work on a farm to relive her childhood memories, and this time especially, she finds herself reimagining her childhood.

And you can’t help but to relate to her. All the fallen memories pass by, and it brings the smile, laugh, and joy of your childhood as well.

This movie is so cozy and relaxing that you don’t need your meditation classes for a week to relax. It’s just too good to skip. Just go for it because you won’t get time to relive your childhood any other time but now.
