Behind the Scenes of LoL: Coolest Game Facts that May Blow Your Mind
Having been around for more than 15 years, League of Legends has gathered one of the largest player bases in the gaming world. However, very few people know everything about the Riot Games’ crown jewel, as its huge universe hides a lot of secrets and curiosities that may surprise even the most avid fans. So, we have collected the coolest facts about this iconic MOBA title that you may not know.
Dota 2 and League of Legends Share the Same Father
Dota 2 and LoL have always been great competitors. Many players claim that these titles cannot stop copying each other, while some even consider League of Legends to be a cheap knockoff of Defense of the Ancients (Dota). But can we call something a knockoff if both products were created by the same person?
His name is Steve “Guinsoo” Feak, and he managed to create two biggest MOBA titles in the world. Guinsoo first crafted a custom Dota mod for Warcraft III, which soon became a popular full-scale game. Later on, he joined Riot Games when the company worked on its own MOBA title and was listed as one of the three original LoL creators.
League of Legends Boasts an Impressively Large Fan Base
According to recent data, League of Legends boasts 150 million registered users worldwide, while 117 million of them are playing the game at least once per month. Statistics show that within this year, the monthly number of players has varied between 10 and 47 million, which is much larger than the number of Dota players that has reached only 4-8 million per month. More than 19 million game fans also enjoy LoL betting online while they watch both local and international game tournaments. In addition, League of Legends is highly popular on Twitch and has over 347 million watch hours. At the same time, the total number of LoL streamers has already exceeded 228,000.
LoL Has an Unusual Line of Skins Dedicated to Web Browsers
Although Riot Games did not announce this officially, League of Legends does have an “internet browser skin line”. Great news for those who enjoy finding Easter eggs in video games, isn’t it? The line consists of four skins, each dedicated to a popular web browser: Chrome Rammus, Safari Caitlyn, Foxfire Ahri, and Explorer Ezreal. At the same time, Foxfire Ahri is the only skin whose name slightly differs from the original. The entire line is still available for purchase, and you can check it out at the official LoL SkinShop.
Many Game Items and Characters Were Named After Real People
You probably know that Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Tryndamere, and Ryze were inspired by the original League of Legends creators – Steve “Guinsoo” Feak, Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill, and Brandon “Ryze” Beck. However, there are many other champions and game items named after folks who have left their mark on the history of LoL:
- Ashe: Ashley Merrill, the wife of Marc Merrill (interestingly, Tryndamere and Ashe are also married in the game lore).
- Dr. Mundo: Edmundo “Odnumde” Sanchez, a Riot artist who worked in the company from 2007 to 2022.
- Zilean: Tom “Zileas” Cadwell, a former Riot’s gameplay designer.
- Morellonomicon: Ryan “Morello” Scott, a former Riot’s champion designer.
- Total Biscuit of Everlasting Will: John “TotalBiscuit” Bain, a popular British YouTuber who popularized the game greatly.
- Ohmwrecker: Ryan “Ohmwrecker” Lord, another famous YouTuber and Twitch streamer who promoted LoL through gameplay videos.
- Randuin’s Omen: Robin “Randuin” Liao, a former Riot’s web designer.
- Runaan’s Hurricane: Devon “Runaan” Giehl, a former associate game designer at Riot Games.
- Ziggs: Joe “Hephastopheles” Ziegler, who has worked in the Riot company since 2010.
A neat fact is that some people also named their kids after LoL champions. The most striking names are Singed, Gangplank, Kassadin, Teemo, Nidalee, Zilean, Tryndamere, and Smolder.
LoL Has a Partnership with a Prestigious French Fashion House
This fact is probably less surprising than others on our list, but the game’s partnership with Louis Vuitton is still worth mentioning. Renowned for its luxury products, the prestigious French brand has expanded its reach in 2019 by entering into a partnership with League of Legends. Pretty soon, Louis Vuitton presented a stunning Summoner’s Cup Trophy Case for the 2019 World Championship. However, their involvement with LoL extends far beyond mere trophy design. The brand has also created exclusive skins for game characters, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière. Hence, players can dress their characters in stylish attire and add a touch of high-end fashion to their gaming experience.
On top of everything else, Louis Vuitton’s partnership with League of Legends involved the creation of real-life merchandise devoted to the game lore. The collection included clothing, shoes, and accessories that incorporated iconic LoL imagery with the elements of Louis Vuitton’s signature design. In Europe, it was sold out within just an hour after release.
