The Most Over-the-Top Cooking Anime Ever Made (And It Actually Works)
“Food Wars proves that even cooking can be as intense and dramatic as the biggest anime battles.”
If you think over the top action, sword fight, or battle between giants and supernatural entities can only pique, then wait and check out this show, known to be the best cooking battle made in anime history.
Someone who has been following anime cult for decades guessed by now that I’m talking about one and only anime, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma.
The anime wonderfully depicts that cooking isn’t just about preparing meals, it’s also about building up a proper strategy, creativity, and can turn into epic high-stakes culinary battles.
We will dive more into the topic, so prepare yourself because it’s gonna be a long ride with a lot of excitement and a spicy twist.
Story and Setting: A Culinary Academy Unlike Any Other:
Just like any other top tier shounen anime, we have an overly optimistic and enthusiastic main protagonist, Soma Yukihira. The story centers around Soma but solely focuses on him as there are many highlights of the story.
So, it starts with introducing Soma working in a small diner with his father Joichiro Yukihira, where he regularly challenges him to cooking duels, hoping that one day he would finally defeat him and take over the restaurant.

However, Soma’s life takes an unexpected turn when his father suddenly closes their restaurant and enrolls him in the prestigious cooking academy, Totsuki Culinary Academy.
As said, this is not your ordinary cooking school, it’s an academy that shows no mercy to the lackatrous.
Students have to grind their skills to utter most speciality because Totsuku Academy is known for producing some of the best chefs in the world.
But as usual, surviving there with rigorous tests and battles is not everyone’s cup of tea.Hence, only a small percentage of students actually manage to graduate.
On the flip side, this is what our hero craves for: daily battle and a platform where he could fight to become best amongst all.
Despite being surrounded by some of the elites in the field, Soma refuses to back down. Instead, he keeps on challenging himself and others to get the top one rank at Totsuki Academy.
Shokugeki Battles: When Cooking Becomes War
Now, let’s discuss the most important and exciting aspect of the show, and that is Shokugeki Battles. But what does Shokugeki mean?
Well, to answer formally, Shokugeki is a cooking duel where two chefs compete under specific conditions. But if you think it’s just a normal thing, then you are totally wrong.

These battles are not just simple cooking contests, they are intense competitions where reputation, pride, and sometimes even careers are at stake. Yes, you read that right. If you lose, your career and even your future in the cooking world come to an end.
But now, as for the entertainment part, these battles between cooking elites are super fun to watch. It involves a high level of strategy, knowledge, skills, and hard work.
Chefs must carefully analyze their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses while planning their own dishes. A single mistake in timing or ingredient selection can completely change the outcome and even the future of the respective person as a chef.
But no worries, because our main characters see these challenges as a stepping stone in their career and not as another hustle to complete. Trust me, it makes it a lot more fun and intriguing to watch.
Main Characters Who Bring the Story to Life:
Well, now it’s time to introduce the stars of the show to our hero Soma Yukihira. We have a number of brilliant characters in the show, and that is one of the most crucial things that hooked me to the show instantly.

Let’s talk about them one by one. First comes Erina Nakiri, who is known to be the academy’s most respected student thanks to her legendary tasting ability known as the God Tongue.
She also becomes one of the crucial characters in the show later on, but sometimes I felt her character was lacking character development. It was there kind of, but still I was expecting more.
Nevertheless, her queen-like aura definitely adds extraordinary charm to the show. Our next character is super cute and shy.
Megumi Tadakoro has had a tough beginning as she was not confident in her skills, but as the show progresses she makes wonderful friends. Her character development grows tremendously. Not to spoil anything, but she is one of the cutest characters in the show.
Takumi Aldini is the one and only Italian chef in the show, and how can a culinary series be complete without mentioning the diverse range of Italian cuisine? Obviously, we can’t stay without our pizza.

Well, back to the topic. Takumi Aldini is the direct rival of Souma Yukihira, as he challenged him from the beginning of the show. But as the show progressed they started getting close and became rivals plus besties as the story progressed.
Other than this, there are other characters like Alice Nakiri who specializes in molecular gastronomy. She is awesome in whatever she does, and other than that one of my favourite spice kings, Akira Hayama, is another highlight of the show.
Plus there is one more character that cannot be left unmentioned: Ryo Kurokiba is a seafood specialist. His personality changes whenever he ties his signature bandana before cooking, which is worth watching.
Animation and Food Presentation:
Now let’s talk about an amazing visual presentation produced by J.C.Staff, that brought food to life with vibrant colors and detailed animation.

Each and every dish from grilled meats to elegant desserts was presented in such a detailed way that you won’t be able to resist yourself and get hungry every time you binge it. The sizzling sounds, steam effects, and close-up shots made the series perfect to watch while having your favourite cuisine.
But it’s not limited to that. The show is pretty popular in the community because of its over the top reaction after having the food served, that can be too much at the time.
Final Verdict:
Well, for me the anime is super entertaining, nothing serious but a perfect binge watch. But as the series comes to an end it feels rushed to the point that it seems pointless. But trusting the first two seasons is all you need to binge on weekends.

So, don’t forget to tune in to Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, and for more such exciting anime updates and recommendations stay tuned to our site. Happy watching!
