Rockstar Games Integrates Advanced Ray Tracing for GTA VI
Grand Theft Auto VI hasn’t been released yet, but it’s already sparking a great deal of discussion within the gaming community. One of the main topics of discussion is the game’s graphics, which are expected to outshine all its competitors. Following the screening of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on 27 August 2026, fans paid particular attention to the lighting, reflections and ray tracing. Rockstar confirmed an important detail: the footage was recorded directly from the game on the PlayStation 5, rather than being created as a separate CGI trailer.
Ray Tracing in GTA VI: What Has Actually Been Confirmed
The main question surrounding the graphics in GTA VI is to what extent Rockstar has managed to implement ray tracing effectively. Even after the first trailer, experts noted the global illumination, reflections and shadow behaviour, but the early footage did not allow for a definitive conclusion regarding the engine’s final configuration.
The 2026 trailer provided more information. The GTA VI gameplay footage showcased daytime and night-time scenes, car journeys, interiors, beaches, urban areas of Vice City and other parts of Leonida. Ray-traced global illumination features prominently in the analysis. This is a system that allows light to behave much more naturally when interacting with the surrounding geometry. According to the analysis, Rockstar uses a combination of RT and more traditional methods, with certain effects potentially having limitations in terms of range or detail.
Rockstar needs ray tracing not just for the sake of having ‘RT’ in the specs, but to control lighting in complex scenes. Sunlight, Vice City’s neon lights, car headlights, water surfaces and reflections on car bodies create a variety of conditions, so a single universal reflection system would be too costly for consoles.
How Ray Tracing Changes Vice City and Leonida
In Vice City, ray tracing is most noticeable where traditional lighting techniques in video games reveal their artificiality. A night-time street with neon signs is a simple example: light sources are positioned next to vehicles, glass, wet tarmac and other shiny surfaces. If the lighting takes the scene’s actual geometry into account, the result looks more convincing even without increasing the number of polygons.
One of the most challenging elements to implement is reflections on water. Reading gaming forums and gta 6 news, one can see that many experts are debating whether it is worth overloading the game to make this element as high-quality as possible. As can be seen from the latest trailer, the developers have struck a balance. The overall game environment is rendered clearly, whilst additional elements are rendered in the standard style. This hybrid approach allows Rockstar to avoid unnecessary performance overhead.
The PS5 is of particular interest. Rockstar announced on 27 August 2026 that the entire Extended Look was recorded directly from gameplay on the PlayStation 5. However, experts have doubts regarding the game’s performance specifically on the PS5, and suggest that, even at high FPS, the standard console may only be able to handle medium graphics settings rather than the highest. Sony and Rockstar have not disclosed the full list of technical differences between the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Therefore, one should not attribute specific RT features to the Pro version that the studio has not officially mentioned.
Performance, PS5 Hardware and the Cost of Better Graphics

High image quality comes at a price, and GTA VI clearly illustrates the challenges of modern console rendering. After analysing the Extended Look, one can see not only the strengths of the graphics but also the compromises involved. Experts noted an in-game rendering resolution of approximately 1440p and a frame rate of around 30 frames per second in the footage shown on a standard PS5.
This is a significant indicator, as GTA VI operates in an open world where both the GPU and CPU are under heavy load simultaneously. Dozens of different objects may be on screen at once, whilst the lighting system must continuously calculate how light interacts with surfaces. Additional RT passes only increase this workload.
At the same time, Rockstar has a significant advantage in the form of a dedicated hardware environment. GTA VI does not need to support the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Rockstar has confirmed a release on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Moving away from the previous generation gives developers more memory, a faster SSD and significantly more advanced graphics capabilities.
What Advanced Ray Tracing Means for GTA VI at Launch
GTA VI is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026. Everything looks top-notch in the trailer, but there are questions about what the game will be like at launch. A similar situation arose with Cyberpunk 2077, where the game looked impressive but was riddled with bugs at launch. Returning to GTA VI, the example of the Ferris wheel in Vice City shows that developers can adjust the lists of objects involved in specific ray-tracing passes.
For the player, this means that GTA VI does not necessarily need to have the same level of ray tracing across every square metre of the map. It is far more efficient to use RT where the difference is clearly noticeable, and to apply SSR to less important areas.
The technical aspects of GTA VI are also important for future updates. Rockstar already has experience of providing long-term support for Grand Theft Auto V, so patches may be released after launch to adjust the quality of reflections, lighting, performance or the behaviour of specific graphical systems. Final conclusions regarding the game’s stability should be drawn based on the release version, rather than just the trailers.
As a result, ray tracing in GTA VI can be considered part of a larger technical framework. It works in tandem with geometry, materials, weather, water, vehicles, NPCs and lighting. If the final version maintains the level of quality shown in 2026 on a standard PS5, it will be one of the finest examples of RT implementation in a major console game of this generation.
Conclusion
Putting all the facts together, it’s fair to say that Rockstar is developing a truly unique and high-quality product. Ray tracing is one of the key components of GTA VI’s visuals, although the studio has not yet revealed the system’s full technical specifications. The final assessment will depend on the release version; it is only then that it will become clear how seamlessly GTA VI will integrate ray tracing, its vast game world, complex world simulation and the hardware of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Even now, however, it is clear that Rockstar has opted not for the maximum number of RT effects, but for the selective use of ray tracing where it best enhances the experience of Vice City and the entire world of GTA VI.
