12 Years Later, Studio Ghibli’s Lost Movie Prequel Has Finally Been Found, And It’s Stunning!
Studio Ghibli has been one of the studios that has changed many lives. The charismatic cinematography of Studio Ghibli, the absolutely charming characters, and of course, unforgettable stories have been an unbreakable pillar that has moved many fans.
But as the title suggests, there has been some missing prequel that had never come into existence, and it just got revealed.

The late Isao Takahata, who co-founded Ghibli, revealed that he had drafted a prequel to his celebrated 2013 film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and it was unknown to the world till now.
But now, manuscripts have surfaced recently from Isao Takahata’s archives, and it seems more than a miracle for everyone.
What Was Discovered from Isao Takahata’s Archives:
According to the researchers, they found over 130 pages of handwritten notes and proposals titled “Adaptation Proposal for an Animated Version of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.”

According to Anime Hunch, the notes outline a prequel narrative set on the Moon, where Princess Kaguya discusses with the lunar elder who warns her about the dangers of Earth. This discussion was never seen in the original movie, and it consists of some heartbreaking moments.

Moreover, it also consists of two previously unknown screenplays titled Oeyama and The Jewel I Received, which were revealed, showcasing Takahata’s dedication and imaginative thoughts that still remained even late in his career.
Why Isao Takahata’s Prequel Idea Never Came into Existence:
Well, Isao Takahata’s prequel never came into existence and was not proceeded to production possibly because of Ghibli’s scheduling, budget priorities, or Takahata’s perfectionism.

To extend Kaguya’s story, it could disrupt the minimal, emotional purity of the final 2013 film.Still, the discovery of the long-forgotten script has created an impact on the minds of fans, and we hope someday it may come into existence.
Final Thoughts:
There have been a lot of great and inspiring movies that Ghibli Studios has given to us, but some are still untold just like Isao Takahata’s hidden prequel. It’s surprising to know how magnificent Takahata’s vision was, and of course, it will be interesting to see what remains hidden to us.
