It’s Turning Out to be a Huge Year for Lara Croft and Tomb Raider Fans

Tomb Raider is one of the most storied names in all of gaming. Lara Croft has fully stood the test of time, with each new rendition of the famed British archaeologist offering new and exciting ways to experience her adventures. Six years ago, the Survivor Trilogy concluded with the superb Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but this year, the iconic character has been thrown into the spotlight over and over again.

In February, on Lara’s birthday in fact, fans were treated to the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered trilogy. Bringing those classic games to modern consoles was a superb move from the increasingly beloved remaster experts Aspyr, and it did well enough to warrant an upcoming Nintendo Switch physical release in the form of a standard and a Collector’s Edition. For those waiting for a physical release rather than just getting a digital copy, June will be the beginning of what will be an exciting year packed with adventures for Lara Croft. Not only is news anticipated for the next mainline game in the long-running series, but the popular protagonist will also be venturing into a new medium towards the backend of 2024.

A character redesign before more reveals arrive

In late March, the developers of the recent Tomb Raider games, Crystal Dynamics, unveiled Lara’s new look. With the new aesthetic set to debut in the game currently labeled “Tomb Raider Next,” many presumed that it would be the first reveal of a wave of details set to arrive about the previously announced release. What we know for now is that the game’s being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and that it’ll link the original games with the new prequels.

Overall, very little had been confirmed before Summer Game Fest 2024, and its host had previously said that the showcase in June wasn’t going to be one for big reveals. Instead, there have been a few leaks that claim to know what’s going on in the new game. Apparently, it’ll be a fully open-world game that’s set in India, and you’ll be able to traverse the map astride a motorcycle.

Naturally, in this open world, there’ll be plenty of hidden caves, tombs, and puzzles to find and solve – similar to the maps of the Survivor Trilogy. There’ll be plenty of different biomes to explore and, presumably, the great animals of India, like Bengal tigers, mugger crocodiles, and Asian elephants will all be roaming around and posing an additional challenge while you’re out and about in the world. Still, we’ll need to wait a little bit longer to get some firm details on the upcoming game, with some kind of update widely expected to come this year.

Lara Croft’s adventures across entertainment

Being such an iconic game character, it makes sense that Lara Craft has already enjoyed many adventures beyond consoles. On top of this, Amazon has green-lit a live-action series to be helmed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The new game likely won’t arrive in 2024, but with the physical version of the remastered trilogy, a new canon animated series, news of a live-action outing, and probably a reveal to come for Tomb Raider Next, 2024 looks set to be a huge year for Lara Croft.
