These Are the Best Video Game Studios in Each Area
In the US today, players don’t just follow franchises anymore. Due to how long it takes to release sequels, sticking to franchises alone is just a long waiting game. Rather, the best thing to do now is following studios. Once you like a game or two from a studio, continue to follow other releases from them, and more times than often, it doesn’t disappoint.
As such, we’ll be showing you some of the top video game studies in different areas like arcade-style, casino-style, MMORPG and even indies. If you don’t know how to break into a genre, start with games from any of these studios.
What Makes a “Best in Class” Studio?
Obviously, we cannot blindly point to something as the “best” without showing you the reasons behind it. Based on these factors, we have evaluated and came to the conclusion that we recommend:
- Consistent quality and polish: There are several studios that release blockbuster games that turn out to be one-off hits. In our evaluation, we made sure to target those who have a record of consistent quality in a span of years. And most importantly, they release regular updates aimed at polishing the already-existing titles.
- Clear identity in game feel and aesthetics: With top studios, there’s an “identity” as to how they approach things. Basically, something that they are good at, and is quite obvious across their titles. It could be storytelling, open world or online features.
- Strong community and post-launch support: This is very important to us because it shows that gamers are actually playing the titles. After all, it isn’t possible for a studio to succeed without having people actively grinding on their releases.
At the same time, we understand that strength varies and different genres warrant unique approaches. Not to worry, we factored this all in our evaluation.
Best For Arcade-Style Games
Arcade-style for modern players means fast runs, instant restarts, score chasing and if possible, a very competitive co-op mode. These are what gives the dopamine hits and it just seems to work for them. And by that, here are the top studios:
- Bandai Namco: Some will argue that this studio paved the way for others. They are the ones behind classic hits like legacy of Pac-Man, Tekken and even Time Crisis. If you want a proper arcade title, this is where to start from.
- Sega: This is the studio behind titles like DNA of Virtua Fighter, OutRun and Daytona USA. They literally moved away from making consoles to focus on the software aspect of gaming. Surely, you’ll find some of their old titles in modern consoles.
- Housemarque: When you look at releases from Housemarque, you’ll come to the realization that they’ve successfully modernized the concept of arcade. Just look at titles like Resogun and Returnal. They are basically fast-paced shooter-arcade hybrids that appeal to lovers of the genre.
Best For Casino-Style Games
We can broadly classify casino-style games as pick-up-and-play because you don’t even need to be the stereotypical gamer to enjoy them. They are simple, easily accessible, and are suitable for long and short sessions, so why not?
In this genre, it was very difficult to find an all-rounder that actually “does it well” because most studios tend to focus on specific niches like slots. And in doing so, they have to sacrifice another category.
However, we found one standout studio that was basically flawless on all fronts. In Pragmatic Play, we found a studio that’s way good with slots, table games and even live casino games. All you just need to do is find where to play Pragmatic slots and see what we’re talking about. Their titles have a distinctive art direction, great sound design, simple mechanics and mobile-first optimization. So, the whole design suits the pick-up-and-play criteria perfectly.
Some of the popular titles to try out are Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Sugar Rush, Wolf Gold and Big Bass Bonanza.
Best for Online Worlds – MMORPG
MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game and some of the titles that immediately come to mind are Final Fantasy XIV and Word of Warcraft. These titles are actively carrying this genre, and so is the studio that developed them.
Square Enix is behind Final Fantasy, while Blizzard Entertainment released WoW, and we can confidently regard them as the best in their crafts. Another notable mention is ZeniMax Online Studios, the big brains behind The Elder Scrolls Online, perfectly combining online and single-player features.
These studios have done a great job of bringing the MMORPG niche to the spotlight. They focus on long-term world building and expansion, keeping everything alive for years. Such consistency is unmatched by competitors.
Indie and Mid-Size Studios that Own Their Niches
We understand that “best by area” is not only about the big names with fat budgets. Some small studios also manage to stand out and perform well in their little ways. Here are some notable mentions:
- Sugergiant Games: When it comes to driving an in-game narrative, this studio is the master of it. You get proper storylines with systems-driven actions as with games like Bastion and Hades.
- ConcernedApe: They specialize in a relaxed life-sim model. Although it is a solo dev, it still works as a “studio brand” and you can see the vision. Try out Stardew Valley and see what we are referring to.
These mid-sized and Indie studios are also putting in the work, and while they don’t have big budgets, several of them still keep up in a competitive market. So, sometimes, switch things up and play titles other than the big names.
