There were a lot of great trailers for all kinds of games during this year’s Gamescom. I’m going to be looking at some of these trailers and delving a little deeper into them. First up, it’s the H.P. Lovecraft inspired game Transient from indie developers Stormling Studios.
Stormling Studios- who previously worked on the Darkness Within series and the Conarium game- have got a knack for emulating the creepy horror style of author H.P. Lovecraft and Transient looks to be continuing this theme. H.P. Lovecraft’s fiction work is well known worldwide for its gothic horror style mixed with science fiction as well as weird fiction too. I mean, the guy literally has a literary genre named after him (Lovecraftian horror) so his material is ripe for the plucking when it comes to pop culture. Video games are a brilliant way to bring this inspiration to life and there are several games that very clearly have elements inspired by Lovecraft’s work such as Bloodborne, The Sinking City, and- somewhat more obviously-The Call of Cthulu series. It is no surprise that Lovecraft’s work would continue to inspire game developers worldwide.
The official website for Stormling Studios describes Transient as “H.P. Lovecraft meets Cyberpunk.” Sounds like the perfect amalgamation of sci-fi and horror. The website’s synopsis of the game reads as follows, “Delve deep into an obscure dystopian world and hold firm to your consciousness while you explore enigmatic networks where change is permanent but reality is only temporary”.
The trailer hardly gives anything anyway- there isn’t much to speculate on in terms of gameplay- but the themes associated with Lovecraft’s work are certainly prevalent. Check out the trailer below and for more on Transient, you can stay updated on Stormling Studios website.
Transient is due for release in October 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
