World’s Favourite Video Game Character

Who is the world’s favourite video game character?

A recent study found that Pikachu is the most popular character of all time, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario. Furthermore, Pokémon protagonists are far more popular that those from any other gaming franchise.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise; however, despite Pikachu coming out on top, the UK and Canada both favour Sonic the Hedgehog.

That’s right folks, neither Pikachu nor Mario could beat Sonic here in the Great North!

Even more surprising is that Italy’s favourite character isn’t Super Mario – despite him being an Italian plumber.

According to Global Gaming, the study also shows that Pokémon protagonists are far more popular than those from any other franchise, with 65% more search queries reported for Pokémon characters than those in Sonic the Hedgehog, and 33% more than those in Super Mario.

According to the study, the most popular video game characters in each franchise are:

Pokémon, Pikachu
Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic
Super Mario, Mario
Call of Duty, Captain Price
Grand Theft Auto, Trevor Philips
The Sims, Bella Goth
Need for Speed, Ana Rivera
Final Fantasy, Noctis Lucis Caelum

The report also found that Bella Goth (wife to the premade Sims’ staple Mortimer Goth) is more popular amongst gamers than her husband, while Need for Speed’s Ana Rivera is the fan favourite of the franchise – beating out brother Lucas Rivera and Officer Danny Shaw.

That makes The Sims the most female-forward franchise featured, as the average female character was found to be a staggering 573% more popular than males. In comparison, the average male character in Mario is 257% more popular than Princess Peach.

The research also settles the debate as to whether Sonic or Mario – who often go head-to-head in console games – reigns supreme, as the hedgehog is almost a third (28%) more popular with gamers than the plumber.

Editor’s Note: The data gathered for the study is reported to come directly from ahrefs and Google Trends. The data looks at the main characters featured in the eight most popular video game franchises of all time and includes data for 50 countries.
