Ever wondered what the cursed offspring of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr Robotnik/Eggman would look like? Well I’m sure Deviantart already had you covered but now you have the chance to play as this oddly adorable spawn of the devil in Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
Fall Guys developers Mediatonic showed off egg Sonic in a Twitch stream but he is now available in game for 10 crowns. If you are terrible at the game like me, you can also get the top or bottom half of the Sonic costume for 5 crowns. The costume is receiving some flak for being a bit ugly and I can see how you might think I feel the same way due to the opening statement of this blog. But I actually really like this chunky thicc boy Sonic outfit. I mean, have you seen the Fall Guys characters? They are thick and bouncy little egg people. What did you really expect? This is another example of the negative always seeming to take priority in the media. Rather than mocking the hedgehog egg boys, why can’t we celebrate them in all of their buoyant glory?
I think it is so impressive that an indie game that gained attention for being free on the PlayStation Store has managed to achieve deals with some of the top game companies to create skins for their game. They collaborated with Valve to create Portal and Half-Life themed skins (I really want to see a Left 4 Dead skin but I guess it might scare the children) and now they have teamed up with Sega to bring us a Sonic skin. Not only are there possibilities for other Sonic characters to become skins- Tails, Amy, Knuckles (not the Ugandan ones, though that would be hilariously inappropriate) to name a few- but this team up could pave the way for other significant collaborations for Mediatonic and Devolver Digital. So, what kind of skins could we see in the future?
Whilst any kind of skin is possible due to the Fall Guys design being a blank slate of sorts, I think more animal themed gaming characters would be a great place to start. A Nintendo partnership wouldn’t be easy to obtain but imagine the possibilities of Pokémon skins, such as the ones above created by Twitter user @ChasingPolys. There are literally hundreds of options for Pokémon skins, not to mention the weird mashup designs you could get with players switching top and bottom halves of costumes. Another Nintendo partnership that could be great would be Animal Crossing or Star Fox. Some Sony ones that spring to mind would be Ratchet and Clank or Horizon: Zero Dawn. Imagine all the little Aloys with their glorious red hair or all the different kinds of robotic animals. As long as Fall Guys remains a popular property, we could get some really cool crossovers in the future.
