Nintendo is Banning Brands from Bringing Politics into Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the best-selling games this year, having currently sold more than 26 million copies worldwide. Various brands and celebrities have jumped on to the Animal Crossing bandwagon, with events, brand partnerships and even late night talk shows being hosted within the game. However, Nintendo is clamping down on what brands are able to do in New Horizons due to certain political views being broadcast in-game.

The most notable use of these politics was with Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. His team used the game to release Biden yard signs for players to use within the game. They also created a whole island which would provide players with information on Biden’s campaign as well as how players could go about casting their votes. This is now strictly against Nintendo’s new rules, with their announcement specifically stating “Please also refrain from bringing politics into the game”.

Joe Biden’s political campaign within Animal Crossing: New Horizons is just one of the reasons that Nintendo have set up their new regulations surrounding promotion and branding in-game.

Nintendo are known for being quite tough when it comes to fan made content and it often seems like overkill. However, I think these rules are completely understandable. Video games are highly enjoyable means of entertainment that are a brilliant way to escape from the hardships of reality for a little while. But at the end of the day, that is all they are. They are games. I’m a huge gamer who probably spends way too much of my life engaging with games of all kinds but quite frankly, I think politics should stay within the real world. It takes away from the escapism of video games when you find yourself being advertised to whilst you’re trying to enjoy yourself and forget about reality for a while. Nintendo have every right to instate these rules and I have to agree with them on this one.

To read the new rules for yourself, have a look at them all here.
