Back when Marvel’s Spider-Man was released for the PlayStation 4 back in 2018, eagle eyed fans were quick to spot the creepily hilarious “boat people” whose character models referenced those from the 1997 GoldenEye 007 game for Nintendo 64. If you’re familiar with that classic title, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I refer to them as nightmare inducing. Well, that gem of an Easter egg is back with a vengeance in the new remastered Marvel’s Spider-Man that was released for the PlayStation 5 alongside the new Spider-Man: Miles Morales game.
Reddit user SenoirTaco posted the revamped “boat people” in the Reddit post below. You can see that there is a little extra inclusion from the developers of a sticky note attached to the terrifying character model that reads “Did you miss us?” complete with a little heart. Very touching stuff. Also still super creepy. I just can’t get that tormented boat person face out of my head. It’s fine. I didn’t want to sleep tonight anyway.
These little Easter eggs are always fun to find and demonstrate a willingness from developers to play along with certain jokes. It never ceases to amaze me how much time and effort must be put into some of the more elaborate Easter eggs in video games. The “boat people” may be a simpler surprise, but it is a memorable- and highly disturbing- one none the less.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is available now for the PlayStation 5 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales is out now for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5.
