Marvel’s Spider-Man 3: What Could It Be?

by Antonia Haynes

If you’re a fan of comic book movies, comic books or just movies in general, you’re probably aware of the big news surrounding the third instalment in the Marvel Studios’ third Spider-Man film. The first two MCU Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland taking on the lead- Homecoming and Far From Home– did exceedingly well and so a third instalment was a no brainer. There was a bit of controversy surrounding the Sony and Marvel deal- with it being unclear as to whether Tom Holland would be allowed to continue with his role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. However, Holland will definitely be returning for the third film after some semblance of peace was brokered between the media giants. He’s not the only one coming back to reprise a role though. Benedict Cumberbatch was one of the first to be confirmed to have a role in the third Spider-Man film, reprising his role as Stephen Strange/ Doctor Strange. His powers involve the ability to bend reality to his will, which explains how some of the other castings are possible. Some of these roles are speculative still but several have been confirmed. So let’s take a look at who could be appearing in the as of yet untitled Spider-Man sequel.

So far, the actors and characters with the strongest evidence to suggest they will be in Spider-Man 3 are Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/ Electro– a role Foxx took on in the 2014 film The Amazing Spider-Man 2– and Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius/ Doctor Octopus– from the 2004 film Spider-Man 2. There are plenty of rumours and suggestions as to other actors joining the movie, including Andrew Garfield- who played Peter Parker/ Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man films- Kirsten Dunst- Mary Jane Watson from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films-, Emma Stone- Gwen Stacy in Mark Webb’s films- and of course Tobey Maguire- the classic Sam Raimi Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. Like I said, there are no absolute concrete confirmations of these castings yet but with Foxx and Molina definitely making a return- two characters from both the Raimi and the Webb Spider-Man films- this seems like it could certainly be a possibility. There was even a rumour that cropped up today saying that Charlie Cox- who played Matt Murdock/ Daredevil in the Netflix Daredevil series- will be making an appearance in the movie. Seriously, what even is this movie?

So How Could This Insanity be Possible?

Jamie Foxx’s Electro from Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will likely be making a comeback in the Marvel universe.

If this does come to fruition, even with a few of these characters, this could be absolute madness unlike any superhero film yet. We’ve had plenty of crossovers but to bring characters in from different versions of the same property is unseen in a live action Marvel movie (that I know of) .It’s likely that if all these characters were to show up, they wouldn’t have much screen time. But how could this be possible? Like I said, Doctor Strange’s powers could be a good way to explain these multiple crossovers. He can literally see every single alternate reality and universe, so why wouldn’t he be able to transport characters from different universes all over the Marvel world? It seems possible. There is also a rumour that a Sinister Six team up could be happening. The Sinister Six in the Marvel comics are a group of six super villains who team up to try and take down Spider-Man. The villains within this team have switched around throughout the comic series but Electro and Doc Ock are usually involved. Other members who have been part of the team include Vulture, Mysterio, and Sandman, who have all made appearances in various Spider-Man films (though Vulture and Mysterio are from the Tom Holland Spider-Man films whilst Sand-Man appeared in the 2007 Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 3 movie). Although it would be possible to recast some of these villains for the newer movies, it is far more interesting to have the existing versions of their characters come together after being transported into the same universe. At least, I think that would be pretty awesome anyway.

Doc Ock is another villain making a return to the Spider-Man film series.

With new information and rumours coming thick and fast recently, who knows where Marvel are actually planning on going with Spider-Man 3. With the success of the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse  film from 2018– which brought together various Spider people from the comic books- I wouldn’t be surprise if one huge crossover were to happen. I just hope that if this is the case, we don’t get either an overstuffed flop of a film or a one second cameo gimmick from these characters. All I want is a fulfilling narrative that makes sense and is thoroughly entertaining. One thing I do ask: please bring back Tobey Maguire’s painfully awkward dance from Spider-Man 3. Yes, I know they brought it back in Into The Spider-Verse. No, it is not enough. I want to see Tobey Maguire do it again. Please Marvel. I beg you.
