The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has recently released a ten episode documentary series all about the impact of the narrative in games, why it is needed, and how it is all put together. The first episode revolves around the development of a story and pulls in many famous faces within the games industry. Hideo Kojima, lead director, and writer of the Metal Gear Solid franchise makes an appearance, as well as David Cage who is best known for the PlayStation exclusive, Heavy Rain.

Episode 1 largely explores why storytelling in games is much more unique than in other forms of entertainment and some really good points are made here by the developers, which clearly shows their understanding of game development.

“It’s a matter of how well you can tell the story in a way that the player becomes one with it.” – Hideo Kojima

The basic gist of this first episode is to introduce the views that are held by the people that are being interviewed, as well as to clearly define the fact that narrative in video games can be vastly different from anything else. Something that is brought up by Ru Weerasuriya of Ready at Dawn Studios is that the player has the freedom to do what they want, which adds an extra layer of intricacy to representing the story in an understandable way.

The first episode is enjoyable and it’s nice to have the insights of people with experience in these matters, however, it would have been even more enjoyable with some opposing views, in order to stimulate discussion between the audience. A lot of people do tend to disagree with David Cage’s philosophy too, as his belief is that there is an ever-growing need for a strong story in games.

His first memory of ever playing a game was the original Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation. Since then Lewis has never looked back and enjoys playing Metal Gear Solid to this day. Starting out writing a terrible article about why Metal Gear Online 3 is good, he realised he needed to shut up about Metal Gear and try some new things. He also loves Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts, not as much as Metal Gear Solid, though. Pretty much any game is enjoyable to him unless it’s a visual novel.
