Godzilla Is Getting A New Anime Netflix Series

There have been plenty of anime film adaptations of Godzilla in the past- such as 2018’s Godzilla: The Planet Eater and 2017’s Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters– and all have been relatively successful commercially if not amazingly received critically. The success of the anime films- plus the modest success of the American Godzilla movies- has led to a Godzilla anime series to be greenlit by Netflix.

The series- called Godzilla: Singular Point will be separate from the other Godzilla anime projects available to watch on Netflix. It also has a rather stellar team working on it, which could elevate it above the other Godzilla animations in terms of critical reception. Bones Inc- a Japanese anime studio that I recently discussed due to their involvement in the Gotcha! Pokémon music video– and Orange Co Ltd- the Japanese animation studio behind the insanely popular Beastars anime- will be teaming up for Godzilla: Singular Point. The series will combine both traditional and 3D animation and will be directed by Atsushu Takahashi, who was second unit director for Studio Ghibli’s 2001 classic Spirited Away. Speaking of Studio Ghibli, Eiji Yamamori- a key animator at Studio Ghibli- will also be working on the series and designing the monsters. Some of his work includes Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and The Cat Returns (I love this cat crazy anime movie and I never understood why it wasn’t more popular. Go watch The Cat Returns, seriously).

This series is chock full of impressive Japanese creative talent such as these guys, but there’s more. Composer Kan Sawada, science fiction author Toh EnJoe and Japanese manga author Kazue Kato are also on board for Godzilla: Singular Point. The Netflix series is also going to be produced by Toho Studio, who have been with Godzilla since his humble beginnings back in the 1950’s. They also produced the Hollywood Godzilla movies, the other Netflix Godzilla anime movies and the Kong: Skull Island movie. Their animation division also co-produced Spirited Away with Studio Ghibli as well as various other animated works such as the animated Pokémon movies. With a team like this, expect big things from this anime series. Godzilla: Singular Point is due for release next year, in 2021.
