If you’re a fellow Brit like myself, you will likely have at least heard of the now-international television quiz show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Although the show has gone on to become a worldwide phenomenon, the show was created in Britain in the late ’90s and is still popular today. One of the most shocking scandals in the history of game shows occurred on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? when a couple scammed their way to the one million pound top prize. Their story has now been turned into Quiz, a three-part mini-series which is coming soon to the US.
The guilty parties in this cheating scandal were Major Charles Ingram (played in the series by Matthew Macfadyen) and his wife Diana (Sian Clifford) along with Tecwen Whittock, a college lecturer who acted as an accomplice (Michael Jibson). They used a system wherein Whittock would cough whenever the host of the show -Chris Tarrant- (Michael Sheen) would read out the right answer from the four multiple-choice questions. Producers became suspicious at the sudden turnaround in Ingram’s performance (this occurred on the second day on filming the show) as well as at the constant coughing.
The story made news headlines in the UK but was skimmed over in the US due to it occurring around the same time as the September 11th terror attacks. Because of this, the scandal may not be known to a great deal of US viewers.
Quiz has already been released in the UK, but it will premiere in the US on Sunday, May 31st with the following two episodes airing on June 7th and June 14th. Check out the trailer below.
