Facebook’s Original ‘FarmVille’ is Finally Saying Goodbye

An era is coming to an end with the news that Facebook’s original Flash based game FarmVille will be shutting down entirely on December 31st, 2020. This isn’t highly surprising as it was already announced back in July that Facebook would no longer be supporting Flash games by the end of the year. However, it is hard not to see the significance of this closure due to the lasting legacy of FarmVille.

FarmVille was one of the very first Flash games that Facebook supported. Developed and published by Zynga way back in 2009, the game is one of the most well-known farming simulators in gaming despite it being one of the older and simpler titles. I mean, let’s be honest here, everyone and their grandmothers is aware of and have at least tried FarmVille before. It marked the beginning of popular Facebook Flash games and after its launch in 2009, it was the most popular game on the website for two years.  The game spawned multiple sequels, had various partnerships with top brands and even won the award for Best New Social/Online Game back in 2010 at the Game Developers Conference. Attracting tens of millions of players at its height, there is no doubting the cultural impact that FarmVille had. The game was even mocked in the South Park episode “You Have 0 Friends”. You know you’ve made it big when that happens.

Those who are still playing FarmVille will still be able to make purchases in the game until November 17th, but the payment system will be shutting down after this date.  FarmVille will be shutting down completely on the aforementioned date of December 31st, 2020. The game will still be playable via Zynga’s mobile sequel, FarmVille 2: Tropic Escape and a third mobile game will be coming at some point. So pour some water out for your crops one last time and kiss your chickens goodnight. We will never forget you, FarmVille.
