Dontnod Co-Founder Reveals ‘Cendres: A Survival Journey’ at Gamescom 2020

by Antonia Haynes

A new game from the co-founder of Dontnod Entertainment was revealed at this year’s Gamescom digital event and it looks like an intriguing tale of survival and desperation.

Cendres: A Survival Journey will be a game with a narrative focus set in a post-apocalyptic world where geological disasters brought about the end of humanity. The trailer is hugely atmospheric, highlighting the stylised nature of the Cendres game. It seems to be using an entirely black and white colour scheme which emphasises the dark and unforgiving nature of the world within the game. The flashes of colour that we do see- namely the bright red stains that indicate blood- only accentuate the unforgiving nature of this new world. The game is being development by a new gaming studio- Nameless XIII- founded by Dontnod co-founder Hervé Bonin and published by Dear Villagers. Dontnod are known for their narrative games such as the Life is Strange series and the recent Tell Me Why, so hopefully Cendres: A Survival Journey will be able to provide the same kind of immersive storytelling.

Cendres: A Survival Journey will be released in 2021 for Steam. Have a look at the trailer below.

“We are huge fans of “Choose your own adventure books” and wanted to combine their often incredibly detailed and captivating worlds with the interactivity of an adventure video game.”, says Hervé Bonin, cofounder of developer Nameless XIII. “We found the post-apocalyptic setting offers the unique position to confront players with their own morality stripped of any rules or judgment from the real world. The game is really about questioning yourself and your own actions and decisions when faced with complex choices that are not black and white – it’s like peering into the dark corners of your own morality and finding out what’s lurking in the shadows.”
