Taiwan’s IKEA 2021 Catalogue Gets the ‘Animal Crossing’ Treatment

by Antonia Haynes

Yep, it’s another blog post about the insanely popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The Nintendo Switch title- which was recently announced to have sold 22 million copies worldwide– has become so popular that various brands are trying to get in on the craze. One of the brands that have recently jumped aboard the Animal Crossing hype train is IKEA. The Taiwanese IKEA Facebook page showed off their 2021 catalogue but surprisingly, the marketing team have also gone to the effort to recreate the catalogue entirely within New Horizons.

This isn’t the first time that IKEA has reflected popular culture in their catalogues. Their United Emirates branch previously recreated living areas from famous television shows The Simpsons, Friends and Stranger Things. However, this is the first time that a video game has been utilised within the IKEA catalogue. It is another example of how Animal Crossing: New Horizons is transcending the box that video games are often forced into. The game is crossing multiple media platforms, from talk shows to charitable causes and now furniture catalogues. There will always be the companies that are simply trying to cash in on the popularity of the game but it is clear that time and effort has gone into recreating the images in the catalogue so there must be some understanding and enjoyment of the game from someone in the IKEA team at least.
