I recently wrote a blog about the sudden rise in popularity of the 2018 whodunit indie game Among Us. The game skyrocketed to fame due to YouTubers and Twitch streamers publicising it with play through videos and livestreams. The game has spawned various internet memes, videos, fan art and more. Even yours truly drew a little bit of crossover fan art for Among Us (which I will include below for a little bit of shameless self-promotion. Don’t judge). However it is this popularity that has led to the cancellation of the upcoming sequel, Among Us 2.
Developers of Among Us Inner Sloth- a tiny team of three people-created a post in their developers log on their official website titled “The Future of Among Us”. In the post, the developers confirmed that they are cancelling the planned sequel- Among Us 2– due to huge surge in popularity. The blog reads as follows:
“The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1.”
This was clearly not an easy decision for the devs but it makes a lot of sense. Rather than start from scratch, they are choosing to work on what they already have and what is already popular with gamers worldwide. The devs go on to explain in the blog that this is a more difficult decision as it means having to delve into the code and completely update it rather than start afresh. It isn’t clear just how much content the developers are planning to add to Among Us, but they have stated that all of the content that they had planned for Among Us 2 will now be added to Among Us.
